2022 British Open odds: Surprising PGA picks, golf predictions by model that nailed the Masters

in Golf News
0 0

Approaching the final golf major of the season, the 2022 Open Championship, the year’s first three majors have seen three different winners. If that trend continues at The Open 2022, it will mark the fourth straight year that no golfer wins multiple majors, as Brooks Koepka (2018) was the last to do so. But the three winners thus far this year — Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas and Matt Fitzpatrick — are all highly-ranked golfers with short 2022 Open Championship odds at Caesars Sportsbook. Should you back any of those three with your Open Championship 2022 bets?

The 150th Open Championship will tee off Thursday, July 14 from the Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland. Rory McIlroy, who won the British Open in 2014, is the 9-1 favorite at Caesars Sportsbook and the only golfer with single-digit odds. Other favorites in the latest Open Championship odds 2022 include Jon Rahm (10-1), Scheffler (12-1), Thomas (14-1) and Fitzpatrick (20-1). Before locking in your 2022 Open Championship picks or entering any PGA DFS tournaments on sites like DraftKings and FanDuel, be sure to see the PGA Tour predictions and betting advice from SportsLine’s proven golf model.

SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, it’s up over $9,500 on its best bets since that point, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure’s model included Thomas in its best bets to win the 2022 PGA Championship. That bet hit at +1600, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets returned almost $800. At the 2022 Masters, McClure’s model was all over Scheffler’s first career major championship victory heading into the weekend.

In addition, McClure’s best bets included Collin Morikawa winning outright at the 2021 Open Championship, even though he was a massive 40-1 long shot. The model was also all over Rahm’s (10-1) first career major championship victory at the 2021 U.S. Open. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the weekend, but the model still projected him as the winner.

This same model has also nailed a whopping eight majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2022 British Open golf tournament is approaching, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2022 Open Championship predictions

One huge shocker the model is calling for at the Open Championship 2022: Collin Morikawa (18-1), the defending British Open champion and one of the tournament favorites, stumbles and doesn’t crack the top five. Morikawa had fifth-place finishes at the U.S. Open and Masters, but he was nowhere to be found on the leaderboard at the PGA Championship, finishing outside the top 50.

Last year’s Open Championship remains Morikawa’s last victory, and while he started this tour season with five straight top-10s, success has been fleeting since then. Over his last 10 tournaments, he has more finishes outside the top 50 (four) than he has inside the top 10 (three). His biggest culprit has been his short game, which has gone from above average to among the tour’s worst. He ranks 180th out of 204 players on tour in strokes gained: around-the-green (-.307), and that weakness could be magnified at a course with over 100 bunkers.

Another surprise: Dustin Johnson, a 28-1 long shot, makes a strong run at the title. He’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Johnson finished eighth in last year’s British Open, which is among his four top-10s at the Open Championship. He’s also competed at St Andrews twice before, including a top-15 finish at the 2010 British Open.

Now playing in the LIV Golf Series, Johnson’s PGA Tour metrics still rank him as among the top players on that circuit. He remains one of the best off the tee in the world, ranking 14th in driving distance (312.8 yards) and also has a top-25 mark in strokes gained: approach the green (.532).

The two-time major champion is averaging 4.12 birdies per round, which places him in the 90th percentile. That ability to consistently break par will come in handy at St Andrews, which has seen its last four Open champions post an average winning score of 16-under-par. Considering his long Open Championship 2022 odds but exceptional current form, you can see why the model is high on Johnson.

How to make 2022 Open Championship picks

The model is targeting two other golfers with odds of 22-1 or longer who will make surprising runs. Anyone who backs these long shots could hit it big. You can only see the model’s picks here.

So who will win the Open Championship 2022? And which long shots stun the golfing world? Check out the 2022 Open Championship odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected 2022 Open Championship leaderboard, all from the model that’s nailed eight golf majors, including this year’s Masters.
