The Cincinnati Bengals are one quarter away from capturing the first Lombardi Trophy in franchise history as they lead the Los Angeles 20-16 at the end of the third quarter of Super Bowl LVI. The second half got off to a rollicking start with Joe Burrow finding Tee Higgins deep down the left sideline on a play-action pass for a 75-yard touchdown and the Bengals’ first lead of the game. The play was shrouded in controversy, though, as replays clearly showed Higgins grabbing cornerback Jalen Ramsey’s facemask and tossing him aside as he attempted to haul in the pass.
Things went from bad to worse for the Rams on the ensuing drive when Matthew Stafford’s pass intended for Ben Skowronek got tipped into the air and fell into the arms of Chidobe Awuzie, setting the Bengals up deep in Rams territory. Aaron Donald secured two sacks on Burrow to cut the possession short, though, holding the Bengals to just a field goal. The Rams later responded with a field goal drive of their own to cut into Cincinnati’s lead, and as the game moved into the fourth quarter, they had the ball in Bengals territory with a chance to retake the advantage on the scoreboard.
