Former Manchester United player and now CEO of Ajax, Edwin van der Sar, has recently compared Ryan Gravenberch to Paul Pogba.
Liverpool linked with Gravenberch
Gravenberch is just one of countless talents to have emerged from the famed Ajax academy over the years.
At just 19 years of age, he is still very raw, and has a lot to learn in the footballing world.
But, despite his tender years, the Amsterdam-born midfielder has already begun to garner regular minutes with Ajax’s senior side.
After impressing at youth level, Gravenberch was promoted to the club’s first-team setup during the 2019/20 campaign.
And the Dutchman went on to float in and out of Erik ten Hag’s squad.
The last 12 months+, though, have seen the youngster firmly cement himself in Ajax’s midfield ranks.
All told, Gravenberch has featured 72 times for the Eredivisie giants’ senior side to date.
And across these appearances, the seven-time capped Netherlands international has racked up 10 goals and eight assists.
Such fine form has seen Gravenberch attract interest from some top sides.
One of these was Liverpool, with reports earlier this year suggesting that the Reds wanted to make a summer move for the youngster.
Van der Sar compares Gravenberch to Pogba
Now, as mentioned above, the Liverpool-linked star has been earning comparisons to Man United’s Paul Pogba.
Speaking about Gravenberch recently, Van der Sar stated:
“Gravenberch is a midfielder: he is strong, physical, technical and tall. Let’s say that there is some similarity [with Pogba], but we don’t put too much pressure on Ryan. He’s a boy from 2002.”
Van der Sar is not the first to compare Gravenberch to Pogba, though, with a former youth coach of the midfielder stating the below back in March:
“Physically, I see Frank [Rijkaard] in him from back in the day, because he’s tall and very strong,” Tevreden said. “But technically, I would say he’s a better version of Pogba in his best days at Juventus. In terms of his technique and his presence on the pitch.”
