A fresh update on Aston Villa’s reported pursuit of Joe Gomez has emerged on Tuesday and it is not great news for the Midlands-based outfit.
Football Insider reported on Monday that Aston Villa had not given up hope of prising Joe Gomez from Liverpool this month, with Steven Gerrard’s side expected to make another move for the defender this week.
However, a new report from Football Insider has since emerged on Tuesday, dealing a blow to Villa.
It claims that Aston Villa have been told by Liverpool that Joe Gomez will not leave the club this month, with Jurgen Klopp said to have made up his mind that Gomez is staying, and all offers will be refused.
As a result, Villa are now looking elsewhere for a new central defender ahead of next Monday’s deadline.
Though not mentioned in the report, if Liverpool want to keep Gomez, could Villa not go for Nat Phillips, who is now the Reds’ 5th choice centre-back?
What next for Joe Gomez?
Klopp’s refusal to let Gomez leave the club comes despite the fact the German has pushed Gomez far down the Liverpool centre-back pecking order in 2021/22.
The centre-back, now 24, appears to be Liverpool’s 4th choice centre-back option behind Vigil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate.
So far this term, Gomez has made just four Premier League appearances totalling 12 minutes of action.
And with a World Cup year now upon us, if Gomez continues to be sidelined, surely his chances of featuring for Gareth Southgate’s England at Qatar will only decrease with each month that passes.
Of course, with Matip now 30, a spot in Liverpool’s defence should open up in the coming years, but that is unlikely to help him ahead of this year’s World Cup.
