Lubbock resident Brady Shivers shot 3-under-par 68 and was tied for the lead when Saturday’s first round of the U.S. Mid-Amateur championship was suspended on account of weather.
Shivers birdied three of his first five holes as well as hole No. 17 at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Scarborough, New York. He shared the clubhouse lead at 3-under with four others when play was halted.
“I played really solid today,” Shivers said. “We had a good game plan going into this morning: Stay patient and don’t force anything. The main thing in stroke play is don’t do anything stupid. You don’t have to shoot 4-under every round to advance (to match play). Pars are good in stroke play.”
The U.S. Mid-Amateur is a national championship for post-college players age 25 and older who, by and large, pursue golf around a work schedule. Shivers grew up in Seminole and played at Midland College and the University of Houston.
Since 2017, he has won 11 of Lubbock tournament majors: the Hillcrest Swinger five times, the LakeRidge Stampede three times, the Reese Memorial Day Partnership twice and the Lubbock Country Club Par Buster once. All are two-man low-ball partnership events.
The 42nd U.S. Mid-Am is being played at two courses north of New York City, the other being Fenway Golf Club in Scarsdale, New York. The field of 264 players from 40 countries will be cut after 36 holes for a 64-player match-play bracket.
Lubbock resident John Cardinal, playing at Fenway, was 2-over through nine holes when the round was suspended. Former Par Buster champion Terence Begnel was 1-over through six holes at Fenway.
“I drove it unbelievably today, which is what you have to do out here,” Shivers said. “I hit 18 greens, so didn’t have much stress. The only bad thing I can say about today is I had three three-putts.”
