MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women’s tennis team competed in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships last week in Murfreesboro, Tenn., facing foes from Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Louisville, Xavier, Cincinnati and Kentucky, among others.
All eight Tigers who traveled to the Championships competed in the Main Draw of the tournament.
Among the highlights of singles play, Memphis freshman Emily Meyer defeated second-seeded Ahmeir Kyle of Xavier, who is ranked 100th in the nation, and 17th-seeded Aran Teixido-Garcia defeated Lauren Carrelli of Belmont in the first round, 6-1, 6-1.
In the Round of 16, Camila Romero knocked off seventh-seeded Daria Kuczer of Tennessee, 7-5, 6-4, before bowing out to Csilla Fodor of Purdue in the quarterfinals.
In doubles play, Memphis’ team of Monique Woog/Meredith Jones bested the top-seeded and fifth-ranked duo from Tennessee.
“It was a good weekend for the Tigers,” Memphis head coach Hayden Perez said. “We are gaining valuable experience this fall, and everything we do right now is building towards the spring season. We had some great performances this weekend by everyone, and for one of our doubles teams to defeat the fifth-ranked team in the country was a big accomplishment.
“Having two players reach the Round of 16 in singles and one advancing to the Quarterfinals is awesome. It takes a big effort to be one of the top-16 or top-8 players in our region when you start with a draw of 128 players.
“(Associate head coach) Ryan Haymond and I are proud of this group and believe their hard work will pay off this spring. We have two more fall events and are looking forward to some tough competition in those.”
The Tigers wrap up their fall campaign at the Roberta Alison Invite in Tuscaloosa, Ala., this weekend and at the Mississippi State Invite in Starkville, Miss., Nov. 5-7.
