CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina men’s tennis head coach Chris Powers has announced the addition of transfer Ryuya Ata (Fukuoka, Japan/Texas A&M – Corpus Christi) for the upcoming 2022-23 season.
“Ryuya played at the No. 1 flight at his previous school and I think he will make an immediate impact on the program,” stated Powers. “He is talented in both singles and doubles and his style of play will flourish at CCU. I am really excited for this group to get back on the court this fall.”
A 2020-21 Southland All-Conference selection in both singles and doubles play, Ata comes to Coastal Carolina after playing three seasons for the Islanders at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
The five-time Southland Player of the Week honoree posted a singles record of 12-16 while predominantly playing at the top two flights and a record of 22-11 in doubles play over the last three years for the Islanders.
Last year in 2021-22, he went 4-7 overall in singles play while playing at the No. 1 flight and led the team in doubles wins with a record of 11-3 overall, including a 4-0 ledger at the No. 1 flight. He posted victories in each of the last four doubles matches of the year with Borja Delgado, including the deciding point in the regular-season finale at UIW to help the team win the 2022 Southland Conference regular-season championship.
While earning all-conference honors in both singles and doubles play in 2020-21, he notched an 8-8 singles record primarily at the No. 2 flight. He also posted an 11-7 doubles record with eight of those wins coming at No. 1, including going 4-0 in conference play.
He is a former teammate of current Chanticleer Carlos Berna Ruiz.
The transfer will join fellow transfers Mikko Malinen (Malmo, Sweden/Northern Illinois), Maj Tomac (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Jacksonville State), Jesus Garcia (Moralzarzal, Madrid, Spain/Lee University), and Lucas Wayenburg (Velaux, France/Mercer), as well as local high school product Rivers Cahill (Conway, S.C./Myrtle Beach HS) as part of the 2022 signing class.
