Mets manager Buck Showalter said prior to Saturday’s spring training game that OF Starling Marte will play on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Marte has been dealing with oblique soreness, and played right field in a minor league spring training game on Wednesday as he works his way back to full health.
The 33-year-old did take at-bats during the game, but did not swing. He made the most out of the game, and used his speed to reach first on a bunt single.
Marte has played mostly center field during his 10-year big league career, logging just 3.0 innings in left field since 2017 and never playing right field in a major league game.
He could possibly play right field for the Mets this season with Brandon Nimmo patrolling center field.
Marte won back-to-back Gold Glove awards during the 2015 and 2016 seasons while with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He owns a .984 fielding percentage and has made just 35 errors in his career.
