BOULDER CITY, Nev, – Looking to defend its WAC Men’s Golf Championship, the NM State golf team got underway at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada. NM State is chasing Sam Houston by five strokes following the first round of competition and sits in second place.
Three Aggies sit inside the top 11 after the opening day of action. Garrison Smith sits at two-under-par, birdieing three times throughout the round. An eagle on the second hole from Aidan Thomas was the highlight of day one for the Aggies.
Sitting in third place, Grand Canyon trails the Aggies by two strokes. The middle of the pack is a tight grouping as just five shots separate the sixth-place team, Utah Valley, from third place.
Round One
- Garrison Smith sits in a tie for fourth place, shooting a 70 on the opening round. Smith trails the individual leader by just two strokes.
- Sitting just one shot behind Smith, Aidan Thomas sits in a tie for seventh place. An eagle on the second hole highlighted the round for Thomas, who sprinkled in three additional birdies.
- Four birdies from Alvaro Morales led the Aggies in the opening round. Morales sits in a tie for 11th place.
- Scott Rescigno posted the final qualifying score for NM State on Friday. Rescigno shot a 76 (+4) to round of
- The Aggies led all teams in the field with 52 pars and an average score of 4.26 on par 4’s.
- NM State won the 2021 WAC Men’s Golf Championship by one stroke over Grand Canyon.
