The Dallas stars have taken one of their more intriguing trade chips off the market.
On Friday afternoon, the Stars announced that the club has come to terms on a one-year contract extension with veteran center Joe Pavelski that carries an average annual value of $5.5 million, with an additional $500,000 in performance-based incentives.
Pavelski, who is now tied to Dallas through the 2022-23 season, is on the final year of his current deal paying him $7 million per season, and will be nearing his 39th birthday when his newly-signed extension expires.
You wouldn’t know Pavelski is inching closer to age 40 by looking at him this season, though.
Pavelski is having one of the more productive years of his career at the moment, scoring at a career-best pace of 1.05 points per game while racking up 22 goals and 59 points in just 56 contests. He’s seemingly getting better with age. The Wisconsin native hasn’t slowed down at all since leaving San Jose for Dallas as a free agent in 2019, with Pavelski finishing the pandemic-shortened 2021 campaign last year with an impressive 25 goals and 51 points in 56 games, too.
The Stars, who currently sit one point up on the Edmonton Oilers for the Western Conference’s second wild-card spot with two games in hand, clearly have their sights set on the present, with the benefit of keeping Pavelski for the stretch run seeming to outweigh the value of the trade package they could get at the deadline in the eyes of GM Jim Nill.
If Pavelski keeps scoring at the clip he has for the past two years, that assumption will look like a wise one.
